Seena Hamilton Awards Ester Goldfeld with Tennis Scholarship at U.S. Open

Ojai, CA (PRWEB) September 4, 2008 — Last evening, Seena Hamilton presented Ester Goldfeld, a 15-year-old native of Brooklyn and one of last year’s Easter Bowl quarter finalists, the prestigious Seena Hamilton Laurel Springs Scholarship. The 2007 award went to another New Yorker, Gail Brodsky.

The Seena Hamilton Laurel Springs Scholarship was designed to benefit extraordinary tennis players who require additional financial support to continue their education. Twenty-five percent of Laurel Springs students are athletes and attendance at Laurel Springs has allowed hundreds of junior tennis players to follow their dreams.

This impressive award was designed to honor Seena Hamilton’s contribution to the field of Junior Tennis and was first announced last year by Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, founder and executive director of Laurel Springs School. “Seena has mentored and cared for so many junior tennis champions. She has also brought to public attention important issues of the game. Like Seena, Laurel Springs has changed the face of junior tennis by providing student athletes with a flexible schedule, allowing them to travel to competitions worldwide.”

Hamilton founded the esteemed Easter Bowl Junior Championships in 1968 which is celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2008. Her vision was to provide competitive tennis opportunities for the country’s top players ages 14 — 18. Since its inception, the tournament has showcased the future tennis champions.

“I am deeply touched by the scholarship in my name from Marilyn Mosley Gordanier and Laurel Springs School, and the opportunity it gives to such a valuable scholarship to a talented junior tennis player. It’s a vital contribution, as Laurel Springs School has benefited so many youngsters, many of whom have gone on to Ivy League colleges. They would not have been able to compete without this outstanding college prep distance and online learning program. So every year we will be giving this scholarship to someone we feel is the future of tennis. We are delighted to present Miss Goldfeld, who I feel is one of our most talented players in the United States, with this wonderful opportunity,” said Seena Hamilton.

“I am so proud and grateful to accept this scholarship,” said Ester, but it was her mother, Janna, who explained just how much it meant to them. “Because of this scholarship my child can now be trained close to home; now mother and daughter can bond, and it’s because of this award. She was in Sacramento, California all last year, and I never got to see her, we only talked on the phone. Thank you, Seena and thank you, Laurel Springs School.”

Laurel Springs has eight students participating in this years U. S. Tennis Open. Asia Muhammad and Alumni Alexa Glatch both lost their first rounds in Women’s Singles. However, Asia went on to win her second round in the Girls’ Singles category. Gail Brodsky also won her second round, as did Christina McHale. Nicole Gibbs qualified, but did not win her round. Out of the ten girl’s rounds, Laurel Springs had students in four rounds.

In the Girls’ Doubles competition, three Laurel Springs students, Julia Boserup, Christina McHale and Asia Muhammad, are playing today. In the Boys’ Doubles, Laurel Springs student, Jordan Cox is playing.

Laurel Springs had two boys participating in the Boys’ Singles yesterday. Laurel Springs student, Jordan Cox, who won his first round, but lost his second, and Evan King, played one round and lost. Congratulations to the Laurel Springs students competing at the U.S. Open.
